OFFICE POLICIES

Hours of Operation
Our Johnston office, in the Atwood Medical Center, is open weekdays from 9:00 to 11:30 and 1:30 to 4:30. There is an Atwood Pediatric physician on call during the weekends to answer calls. Routine check-ups, consults, and follow-up appointments are scheduled for weekdays.

Routine Well Care
To promote the normal growth and development of your child, regularly scheduled appointments are planned in advance. Please try to keep your appointments. We routinely call a day in advance to remind you of your appointment. If you must cancel your appointment, please call the office as soon as possible so we may re-schedule your child and use that time to serve someone else. Repeated broken appointments without proper notice will result in a broken appointment fee. Come with questions! You may see any physician in the practice. It is best to identify one as your primary physician, especially for routine check-ups. This allows us to get to know you and your child well. Remember, you are never alone!

Weekday Sick Visits
If a problem or question arises, please call the office (401-274-2910), identify yourself, your child's name, the nature of your call, and with which doctor you wish to speak. We are available for calls throughout the day while the office is open. Please try to call during routine hours.

Atwood Pediatrics has always had an “open door policy” for seeing sick or injured children. At this time due to Covid 19 you must call ahead if you have an issue with your child that needs to be addressed. However, we cannot see sick children  without appointments.

After Hours & Emergencies
Problems do arise when the office is closed. A physician is always available to answer your questions. After hours calls should be reserved for problems which cannot wait for regular office hours. If a problem occurs, call the office and the answering service will take your name and number. They will forward the information to the doctor on call. We will return your call as quickly as possible, usually within the hour. Urgent calls will be handled more promptly. If you do not hear from us within an hour please call back to make sure we received the call and the information was correct.

If your child has a problem which cannot be handled over the phone and needs to be seen after hours, we will make a decision to refer you to a local emergency room (preferably Hasbro Children's Hospital for true pediatric issues) if necessary. Please call us first with problems. 

The physicians at Atwood Pediatrics do not cross-cover with other groups. You will always be treated by an Atwood Pediatric physician.

If a true emergency arises that cannot wait, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

Referrals 
Referrals to a sub-specialist, when needed, are coordinated through the office to insure proper and complete evaluations.
